Blue Economy in Practice at Sustainable Seas NSC Regional Workshops
Events

Moananui joined forces with the Sustainable Seas National Science Challenge (SSNSC) to present a series of regional workshops throughout mid-2024. These gatherings were designed to bring the SSNSC's decade-long research to life, demonstrating its application in real-world settings and focusing on Aotearoa New Zealand’s transition to a blue economy.

With support from local economic development agencies, workshops were held across Otago, Southland, Hawke’s Bay, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki and Northland, uniting a diverse mix of businesses, iwi, research organisations, NGOs, and local government.

As a featured SSNSC case study, Moananui demonstrated how blue economy principles can be effectively applied, fostering local understanding and enthusiasm for sustainable ocean development. Each region was encouraged to develop the blue economy in ways that align with its unique circumstances and needs.

For Moananui, these workshops were a fantastic opportunity to build regional connections and attract new partners who share our commitment to the principles of the blue economy.

With the conclusion of the SSNSC 10-year research programme, research summaries from over 100 projects are available on Tohorā and the SSNSC website. These resources are intended to inspire action, support innovation, and help bring the Challenge’s vison of a healthy ocean and prosperous blue economy to life.
